Taco Bell is giving out free food ahead of Cinco de Mayo — Here's how to get it

April 30, 2021

May 4 is a big day for “Star Wars” fans, but this upcoming Taco Tuesday, a fast food giant is celebrating another celestial phenomenon and giving away free food.

Taco Bell has announced that though it “does not claim to own copyrights to a lunar phase of the moon,” it will celebrate what it is calling a "Taco Moon" — due to the fact that on May 4 the moon will kind of look like a taco — and give away free tacos through its app or online.

Delish reports that fans of the chain around the world can claim a free crunchy taco between 8 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday May 4 on the Taco Bell app or on their website.

This celebration is part of the bigger “I see a Taco” campaign that will be rolled out over the next few months.

Though it’s not clear what other taco-shaped items will spark discounts or free food (Watermelon slices? Empanadas?), the chain said in a press release that it is “certain consumers will start seeing tacos everywhere, which is really just the beginning of reaching ultimate brand fandom.”

If you’re not a night owl or you’d rather enjoy a free taco the following day for Cinco de Mayo, no worries: Taco Bell will offer “two additional, unique offers all day on May 4 and May 5.” Those offers will be available online and for delivery, and are fully customizable.

Earlier this month, the fast food chain announced that it was opening its first digital-only restaurant in the United States.

The restaurant, located in Times Square in New York City, features 10 automated kiosks. Customers will be able to watch their food being prepared and once it is ready, the order will be placed in a cubby which lights up to show the food is ready for pick-up.
