Marvel releases trailer for highly-anticipated 'Shang-Chi,' its first Asian superhero movie

April 20, 2021

There’s a new, groundbreaking Marvel movie on the horizon that superhero fanatics are buzzing about.

The first teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" is out with a lot of trademark gritty Marvel-like action and omnipresent dramatic music.

The project marks Marvel’s first true swing at a blockbuster Asian superhero franchise.

The film "is based on the Marvel Comics character Shang-Chi and stars Canadian actor Simu Liu as a martial artist who has been trained to be an assassin since childhood by the Ten Rings terror organization and then tries to escape to a normal life in San Francisco," says The Hollywood Reporter.

Awkwafina, who rose to fame through comedy, rap and a dramatic performance in 2019’s "The Farewell," stars alongside Liu and is stealing scenes, even in the movie's first trailer.

Production for "Shang-Chi" was halted due to the COVID-19 crisis, but resumed in October.

San Francisco's public transit system (MUNI), which makes a grand entrance at the trailer's conclusion, poked fun at their "starring role in an action movie" on Twitter.

"And here we thought Muni and the #1California were trending because of Temporary Emergency Transit Lanes, but alas, it's due to our starring role in an action movie," the post from the department's official Twitter account read.

The film, which comes during an unprecedented surge of violence against Asian Americans both locally and nationwide, signifies "an opportunity to reintroduce ourselves to the world following years of stereotypes and caricatures and tired tropes," Liu told HuffPost.

"Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" is set to premiere on September 3.
